Why UAE Loyalty Programs Are Becoming Ecosystems

The next phase of loyalty is not another isolated balance. UAE programmes are increasingly connecting value across mobility, retail, banking and lifestyle services.

For most of its history, loyalty was designed as a closed loop. Spend with a company, earn that company’s points, redeem them with the same company. The model encouraged repeat business precisely because the value could not easily leave the ecosystem.

The UAE market is now showing a different direction. Large programmes are beginning to connect with one another, turning loyalty from a collection of isolated schemes into a network of transferable value and partner benefits.

The partnership between ADNOC Rewards and Landmark Group’s Shukran is a useful example. Announced in September 2025, it allowed members to convert points in both directions. ADNOC Rewards members could move value into Shukran for use across Landmark brands, while Shukran members could convert back into ADNOC Rewards. At the time, the two programmes represented millions of users across the UAE.

Interoperability changes the value of a point

A point becomes more useful when it has more than one destination. This sounds obvious, but it changes the psychology of loyalty. A customer is less likely to dismiss a small balance if it can be combined with activity elsewhere or converted into something more relevant.

For businesses, the attraction is equally strong. Partnerships let brands expand their reward universe without becoming something they are not. A fuel retailer can connect to fashion and home retail. A bank can connect card spending to travel or dining. A hospitality programme can offer value beyond its own properties.

The ecosystem grows through connection rather than ownership.

Payments are pulling loyalty closer to the transaction

The same trend is visible in co-branded cards and payment-linked rewards. When loyalty is tied directly to the way a customer pays, the user no longer has to remember a separate step every time. That is important because friction has always been one of the quiet enemies of loyalty. If earning depends on opening an app or presenting a code, some transactions will inevitably go unrecognised.

Payment-linked models reduce that gap and make loyalty feel more automatic.

More connectivity can also mean more complexity

Interoperability is not automatically simple for the customer. Once points can move between systems, questions appear. What is the conversion rate? Does expiry change after transfer? Can points be moved back? Is a promotional balance eligible? Which destination gives the best value?

An ecosystem that offers more flexibility but requires constant calculation can create a new layer of confusion.

This is where user experience becomes strategically important. The best connected loyalty systems will not merely create conversion options; they will help customers understand when those options are useful.

A personal rewards layer can sit above the ecosystem

No partnership will ever include every reward a person owns. Consumers will continue to have balances and benefits spread across banks, airlines, retailers, memberships and employers.

That leaves room for a different kind of product: not another closed programme, but a personal layer that helps users see relationships across programmes.

For Rewaly, this is a meaningful position. It does not need to replace ADNOC Rewards, Shukran or any other issuer. Its role can be to help the consumer remember that those programmes exist, understand the benefits they provide and surface them at useful moments.

The future of loyalty in the UAE looks less like a collection of sealed boxes and more like a web of connected value. The opportunity will belong not only to the programmes that build the largest networks, but also to the products that make those networks intelligible to the people using them.
